Startup credits in Canada

A startup registered in Canada can apply to 1328 programs we track: 933 credit programs and 395 accelerators. 130 more are restricted to other countries, and they are named below.

Canada is well served by the global credit programs and unusually well served by domestic ones, and that second half is what catches founders out. The national programs carry their own ownership and residency tests, and those are stricter than anything a cloud provider asks.

So there are two lists to keep straight. What is open to any registered corporation, which covers most of the cloud and AI catalog, and what is open only to a Canadian-owned corporation, which is where NextAI and much of the public funding sits. NextAI states it plainly: the venture must be a Canadian company owned in majority by Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

The counts below come from live catalog data. On the programme side, Creative Destruction Lab charges no fees and takes no equity, and the DMZ in Toronto counts more than a million dollars of tech credits inside its 18-month incubation, which is the clearest local proof that the accelerator question and the credits question are one question.

What your entity needs to be

Incorporation here is either federal, under the CBCA, or provincial, and for credit programs the two are interchangeable: both produce the registered corporation and business number that application forms want. The choice matters for domestic funding instead, where Canadian ownership and residency tests appear, as they do at NextAI. Incorporating in Delaware for credits alone buys a cross-border filing obligation you keep every year in exchange for a one-time benefit, and it can put the Canadian-ownership programs out of reach, so treat that move as a fundraising decision rather than a credits one.

Not in practice. Both give you a registered corporation with a business number, and that is the level credit applications work at. Where the choice does bite is domestic funding and accelerator eligibility, which is a separate question from credits and worth deciding on its own merits.

Some are, some are not, and reading which is worth the five minutes. NextAI requires a Canadian company with majority Canadian ownership, while Creative Destruction Lab says applications are open globally across its streams and locations. Each listing carries the requirements the programme actually publishes.

No. Nothing in the credit programs keys off a city, and the accelerator map is genuinely spread out: Communitech in Waterloo, Volta in Halifax, Innovate Calgary in Alberta. A distributed team applies on the same terms as one downtown.
