Startup credits in Kenya

Nairobi is the densest startup market in East Africa and it is still routinely missed by credit lists written elsewhere, which either skip the region or fold it into a single Africa row that answers no eligibility question at all.

The practical picture is better than the reputation. A company registered with the Business Registration Service satisfies the entity requirement on the global cloud and AI programs, and the local bench is genuine: iHub and Nailab have been running since the ecosystem began, Antler operates a Nairobi residency, and Villgro Africa and GrowthAfrica cover the impact and growth-stage lanes.

Where founders here actually stall is further down the form: payment and identity verification, a card the provider will accept, and the partner referral that gates the biggest tiers. Those are solvable problems, and none of them is the same thing as being locked out by country.

What your entity needs to be

A private company limited by shares, registered with the Business Registration Service through the eCitizen portal, is what the global programs mean by a registered company, and it clears the entity requirement on the ones open to you. Have the certificate of incorporation, the KRA PIN and a business bank account ready, because verification stalls more applications here than eligibility does. A sole proprietorship filed as a business name is not the same thing and is usually turned down. Incorporating in Delaware or Mauritius for credits alone is the wrong reason to reach for those structures: they exist for foreign investors and they add annual cost and complexity, so let a funding round drive that call, never a credit application.

Yes. The self-serve tiers of the major providers carry no country allowlist, and a Business Registration Service certificate answers the registered-company question they ask. The number on this page is computed from the eligibility rules we store, not from what a landing page claims.

Payment and identity verification, well after the eligibility check has passed. A corporate card the provider accepts, a matching business address and a company email on your own domain clear most of it. Consumer email addresses and personal cards are the usual rejection.

Indirectly, and it is the most valuable indirect route on offer. Partner referral is what opens the largest cloud tiers, so a place at Antler Nairobi, iHub or the Baobab Network can be worth more than the programme cash. Judge the programme itself first.
