Google for Startups Cloud: Eligibility and How to Apply
August 4, 2026 · 3 min read
Google for Startups Cloud carries the largest published credit amount of any programme we track: $350,000 on the AI track. It is also the one where the difference between the headline and what most applicants receive is widest.
The tracks
Google splits the programme by what you are building, and the split is the whole story.
The AI track is where the largest figures live. It is aimed at companies whose product does not exist without the model: training, fine-tuning, or serving at scale. This is the $350,000 number.
The general track covers everything else and is substantially smaller.
The start tier is the self-serve entry point, open without affiliation, and modest by comparison.
The practical consequence: if you are an AI company, applying to the general track first can leave you holding the smaller allocation. Work out which track you belong in before you fill anything in.
Do you count as an AI company?
The distinction reviewers make is roughly this. If your product would still function with the model removed, you are probably general track. If removing the model leaves you with nothing, you are AI track.
A project management tool with a summarisation feature is general track. A company doing document extraction, or serving a fine-tuned model as the product, is AI track.
Being straight about which you are is better than stretching. A misplaced application is a rejection, and rejections have cooling-off periods.
What you need
- A registered company, in a country the programme covers.
- A product that exists, with a website that shows it.
- For the larger tiers, affiliation with an approved accelerator, incubator or investor.
What Google does not require
- A US entity. The programme runs in many countries.
- Prior cloud spend. You do not need to already be on Google Cloud.
- Exclusivity. AWS and Microsoft credits alongside it are fine.
The referral question
As with AWS, the large tiers route through partners. Google's network is somewhat narrower than AWS's but includes most of the well-known accelerators and a long list of regional programmes.
If you are unaffiliated, the start tier is available immediately and is a reasonable way to begin while you work on the affiliation. That sequencing matters: the start tier does not disqualify you from applying for more later.
Compared to the alternatives
| Programme | Published amount | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Google for Startups Cloud | $350,000 | AI-first companies, largest allocation available |
| AWS Activate | $200,000 | Companies already on AWS, broadest partner network |
| Microsoft Founders Hub | $150,000 | Founders with no accelerator or VC |
The longer comparison, with the catch for each, is at AWS vs Google vs Microsoft.
